I'm Benjamin Flores and I'm running for Texas Land Commissioner.
On October 15th I announced my candidacy for Land Commissioner and endorsed State Representative Gina Hinojosa for Governor, the office I sought before leaving that race, because I believe she is the right person to inspire voters across the state and lead Texas forward as its next Governor.
The Land Commissioner oversees the General Land Office which is constitutionally responsible for generating revenue to fund the state’s Permanent School Fund and the Veterans Land Fund. It does this today by leasing the state’s land and mineral rights chiefly to land developers and the oil and gas industry.
I promise to focus the Land Commission on its core mission: funding schools and veterans services, and to making sure every available dollar is getting to where it’s needed. I will prioritize getting money to schools that need it most to reduce the burden on property taxes, to improve and expand veteran services, and to explore opportunities to address housing affordability by incentivizing residential construction on state owned land.
I'll invite solar and wind energy producers to operate on state land, increasing both revenue and power generation in an environmentally conscious manner.
There’s nothing Texans can’t do when we work together. Whether it’s increasing the funding to our schools or helping our veterans closer to where they live, my promise is to be the Land Commissioner who put’s the needs of Texans First.
Hola! I'm Benjamin Flores
I came to the United States from Mexico in 1996 with two bags of clothes, a strong work ethic and a dream. I washed cars, fried chicken at KFC, and repaired hotel computers at a Marriott in California – leading to my 30‑year career in cybersecurity — protecting banks, fintech firms, and county governments.
In 2016, my wife An Huynh, our daughter Nadia and I moved from Austin to Bay City. We starting a small family business raising heritage-breed pigs. Wrestling with the red tape all too common to small producers pushed me toward public service. I stepped up, hoping to make local laws fair and transparent, and was elected to the Bay City City Council.
I currently serve on the city council, on the Bay City Development Corporation, and I represent the city at the Houston‑Galveston Area Council. Drawing on my CERT training, I've helped neighbors after hurricanes and promote community preparedness in Bay City and elsewhere.
Our Community. Our Conversation.
I believe in a Texas where we look out for our neighbors and work together. Where diversity is a strength. Where communities are strengthened and protected. And where problem solving statrs with listen to each other.
I'm running for Land Commissioner to deliver on my values by improving our schools, serving our veterans, and addressing the real challenges facing Texans today and tomorrow:
- Funding schools so that they are safe and well maintained
- Funding for school districts as a way lower property taxes
- Providing veterans financial support to buy a house and access to health care and services closer to home
- Offering incentives for residential construction on state owned land to make housing more affordable
- Increasind the state's power generation by bringing more environmentally-friendly wind and solar power generation on line.
- Ensuring coast protections are adequate to meet the challenges of a changing climate.
